what is the laptop model

There are many ways to be able to check the model of a laptop. The most common are:

  • Where to find it on the computer: on the label included in the laptops you can also see the models, serial numbers, etc. In most computers it is located at the bottom, and will be identified as "Model Name".
  • How to do it from Windows: you can go to Start> Run, or use Windows key + R, type the word msinfo and press ENTER to run. Once inside you can go to System Summary>  System SKU. You can also do it from  Command Prompt or CMD. Once inside the console, execute the command "wmic baseboard get product manufacturer version serialnumer" without quotes.
  • How to do it from GNU / Linux: in order to know the laptop model in your distribution, you can access the Terminal, and from there you can execute various commands to know it, such as lshw or dmidecode. For example, you can run the command “sudo dmidecode | less ”without quotes and press ENTER. That will show you details of the brand (Manufacturer) and the model (Product Name).
  • How to do it from macOS: on a Mac you can easily see the model by clicking on the apple (the Apple logo) that appears in the upper left bar. Then select About This Mac, which is the first option on the menu that pops up. There you can see the model, hardware information, and even the version of the operating system.
  • With third party software: there is a multitude of third-party software to know the computer model, such as hardinfo available for GNU / Linux, or AIDA64 for Windows. There are also many other alternatives, and in them there is usually an option with the supplier and model of the equipment. If there is no specific section, you can look at sections such as DMI or on the motherboard, since the manufacturer's brand and model are usually indicated there.
  • BIOS / UEFI- When you restart your computer or turn it on, you can access the BIOS / UEFI. Each brand can be different (eg: some enter with F2, Del, F1, Esc,…). Inside you can see system information with the make and model.
  • Consulting invoices: if you still have the invoice for the purchase of the laptop, or the email that they sent you for the confirmation if you did it online, then it is a good way to find out which is the laptop model.
  • Looking at the manual: If you keep the usual CDs / DVDs and manuals or quick start guides that come with laptops, the model you have will also come there.
  • Case- As an alternative, laptops usually come with a box. The specific model also comes in the equipment box. However, if it is not very recent, it is likely that you no longer keep the box, so it will have to be done by the previous methods.
